What is Reiki Healing?
Reiki is a spiritual healing practice that originated in Japan in the early 20th century. The word Reiki is derived from two Japanese words:
"Rei" (霊) meaning universal, spiritual, or divine
"Ki" (気) meaning life force energy
Together, Reiki translates to “universal life energy.” The practice involves the gentle laying-on of hands or hovering above the body to channel healing energy, with the intention of balancing the recipient’s mind, body, and spirit. Reiki emphasizes relaxation, stress reduction, and stimulating the body’s natural healing abilities.
Background of Master Mikao Usui (1865–1926)
Early Life: Mikao Usui was born on August 15, 1865, in the Gifu Prefecture of Japan, into a family practicing Tendai Buddhism. From an early age, he showed interest in spirituality, healing, and esoteric practices.
Education & Study: Usui was a dedicated seeker. He reportedly studied medicine, psychology, divination, martial arts, and religious texts (including Buddhist sutras and Taoist teachings). His path blended spiritual discipline with practical knowledge.
Spiritual Awakening: In 1922, after years of searching, Usui undertook a 21-day retreat of fasting and meditation on Mount Kurama, a sacred mountain near Kyoto. On the final day, he experienced a profound spiritual awakening—receiving the ability to channel healing energy, which became the foundation of Reiki.
Teaching & Practice: Usui founded the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai (Usui Reiki Healing Method Society) in Tokyo, where he taught and practiced Reiki. His method spread quickly, offering a non-dogmatic, universal approach to healing.
Later Life: Usui traveled across Japan sharing Reiki. He passed away on March 9, 1926, at the age of 62, but left behind trained students who carried the practice forward worldwide.
